Audiobook Production for Self-Published Authors: What to Know Before You Start

Why audiobooks are no longer optional for a full launch

Audiobook revenue has grown into a multi-billion dollar category, and it is one of the fastest-growing formats in publishing. Readers who listen to audiobooks often do not read ebooks or print at all, they are a genuinely separate audience, which means a book without an audiobook edition is invisible to a meaningful share of potential readers, regardless of how well the print and ebook editions are doing.

Human narration versus AI narration

  • AI narration has gotten dramatically faster and cheaper, and it has become a real option for authors who want an audiobook edition without a large production budget.
  • Human narration still carries a different quality bar for fiction and memoir especially, where voice, pacing, and emotional delivery matter more to the listening experience.
  • The right choice depends on genre and budget more than a fixed rule: a technical nonfiction guide has different narration needs than a memoir built around a specific, personal voice.

What audiobook production actually involves

Beyond recording, a finished audiobook needs editing to remove mistakes and dead air, mastering so the audio levels are consistent from chapter to chapter, and formatting to meet the technical specifications each platform requires. None of this is visible to a listener when it is done right, which is exactly the point, a rough, inconsistent recording is one of the fastest ways to lose a listener in the first chapter.

Jason Gentrup's The Human Compass is one example of what a full audiobook production looks like alongside a print and ebook launch: produced and released together with the other editions rather than added on later, so the audiobook edition was live from day one instead of playing catch-up months after launch.

Where to distribute it

Most authors go wide, distributing across multiple platforms and aggregators rather than exclusively through one, to reach the largest possible audience. A hybrid approach, wide distribution for reach plus direct sales where possible for better margins, is generally the strongest strategy for an independent author without an existing large platform.
